Sharnita Harrison, a master’s student in accounting and business advisory services degree program at
the University of Baltimore, is proving that career transitions paired with dedication
can lead to extraordinary achievements. Recently, Harrison received not one, but two
significant honors that recognize her commitment to excellence in accounting.
Harrison is a recipient of the 2026–2027 Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) Scholars Program Scholarship, that includes a $15,000 award. The PCAOB Scholars Program identifies and invests
in promising students who show exceptional potential to contribute to the profession
with integrity and excellence in the field.
"I am still in shock but honored and grateful," Harrison shared on LinkedIn upon receiving
the news. As a professional pivoting from banking to accounting, this recognition
serves as validation that her hard work and perseverance are paying off.
Harrison's achievements didn't stop there. She was also recognized as a recipient
of the MACPA Educational Foundation scholarship at the association's 125th anniversary celebration on June 18, 2026, at the Junior
Achievement of Central Maryland offices in Baltimore. The MACPA Educational Foundation
provides financial assistance to accounting students at Maryland colleges and universities,
investing thousands of dollars annually to help promising students achieve their educational
goals.
Earlier in the spring semester, Harrison was named Student of the Week, nominated by Dr. Jan Williams, professor of accounting and director of the Accounting Honors Program at the University
of Baltimore. Dr. Williams, who was herself honored at the June MACPA event with the
Max Teichmann Award for her tireless work on behalf of the profession, has been one
of Harrison's key mentors throughout her academic journey.
“Sharnita consistently shows up—not just in the classroom, but in the profession,"
said Dr. Williams. "She has a genuine passion for accounting and takes every opportunity
to connect with professionals, attend industry events, and deepen her understanding
of the field. It's truly inspiring to see a student engage so fully as a professional
member. Her enthusiasm and dedication exemplify the very best qualities we hope to
cultivate, and I have no doubt they'll serve her exceptionally well throughout her
career."
Harrison credits her success to the support system surrounding her at the University
of Baltimore Merrick School of Business. "I am thankful to the University of Baltimore
Merrick School of Business for nominating me and to the PCAOB for investing in the
next generation of accounting professionals," she said.
These scholarships strengthen Harrison's commitment to earning her CPA designation
and contributing to the accounting profession with integrity, excellence, and service.
Her personal journey exemplifies the transformative power of education and the importance
of pursuing one's professional calling.
As Harrison looks ahead to completing her master's degree and achieving CPA licensure,
she represents the best of what the University of Baltimore and the accounting profession
have to offer: dedication, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.
Congratulations, Sharnita, on these well-deserved achievements! The entire University
of Baltimore community celebrates your success and looks forward to watching your
continued growth in the accounting profession.
