A: UBalt faculty selected Themis after rigorous review because it best met the needs of our students. Themis has exemplary bar exam pass rates nationally, provides high-quality materials to students and faculty, and has been consistently supportive of our students. The program's evidence-based approach, NextGen readiness, accessibility, and affordability make it a strong partner.
A: First-year students will have access to Themis First-Year Law School Essentials content, which covers first-year subjects tested on the bar exam (Civil Procedure, Constitutional Law, Contracts and Sales, Criminal Law, Real Property, and Torts). The material includes on-demand substantive lectures, outlines, key concept sheets, and practice essay and multiple-choice questions with corresponding answer rationales and sample answers. Hard copies and electronic copies will be made available. First-year students will also have access to the Themis 1L Skills for Success program, which includes lectures on reading and briefing cases, taking effective class notes, outlining, preparoing for final exams, and developing successful study strategies. The UWorld QBank, with approximately 2,000 practice multiple-choice questions, is available for additional practice.
A: In addition to the first-year resources above, upper-level students will have access to Themis' Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination (“MPRE”) prep course, which remains available in each remaining year of your program. Upper-level students will also have access to Themis' Upper-Level (2L/3L) Law School Essentials content, which covers upper-division subjects (Constitutional Law, Corporations, Criminal Procedure, Evidence, and Trusts and Estates). The material includes on-demand substantive lectures, accompanying key concept sheets, and mini-assessments to test skills and knowledge learned. Hard copies and electronic copies will be made available. Access to the UWorld QBank is available for additional practice.
While you will have access to first-year resources, time may be best spent in your cohort appropriate resources.
A: In addition to the first-year and second-year resources above, third-year and fourth-year students will have access to a diagnostic exam and early bar preparation. This takes the form of NextGen Early Bar Prep, which incorporates substantive Themis lectures, practice questions (performance tests, integrated question sets, and MCQs), and formative skills workshops to help you get a jumpstart on the bar exam. Access to the UWorld QBank is available for additional practice.
While you will have access to first and second-year resources, time may be best spent in your cohort appropriate resources.
A: Faculty will have access to tools and resources to help students reinforce bar-tested skills and concepts within courses. Faculty are provided access to all of these resources and may use some of these materials in their courses. By exploring these resources, students may connect what they learn in class and what they need to succeed on the bar exam.
A: Maryland adopted the NextGen bar exam beginning in July 2026, so students sitting in Maryland will take NextGen. Some other jurisdictions are still administering the Legacy UBE. If you plan to sit outside Maryland, let the Office of Bar Success know early so we can help you prepare accordingly.
A: Yes. The Bar Success Fee is a mandatory fee for in school services regardless of post-graduation bar plans. Your Bar Success Fees remain credited toward the Themis bar review course. If you do not sit for a bar exam immediately after graduation, your credit and your reduced price are protected for two years from your graduation date. If you anticipate a longer gap, contact the Office of Bar Success and we will work with Themis to explore possibilities.
A: Themis provides an unsuccessful first-time test taker complete access to the full Themis bar prep program for two years from the original exam date if the test taker: (1) sits for the exam in the same jurisdiction, or in another UBE jurisdiction if the original exam was a UBE; and (2) provides documentation, within 30 days of the exam, that they were unsuccessful, withdrew, or did not sit.
A: Students on leave do not have access to law school resources. This would include suspended access to Themis while on leave. However, upon returning to the University, you will continue to have access to these resources, so long as there is a continuing partnership between the University and Themis.
A: Beginning in Fall 2026, and as part of UBalt Law tuition and fees, all J.D. students will be assessed a Bar Success Fee that provides access to a suite of Themis bar preparation resources during law school. Students will pay Themis directly if they exercise their option to purchase a post-graduation bar review course.
Cost:
A: The Bar Success Fee is a mandatory fee for in school services regardless of post-graduation bar plans. Our agreement covers more than just bar preparation. It also includes programs and study aids that are designed to help students develop the skills and substantive knowledge fundamental to law school success. The resources and tools required to deliver a successful program are being purchased from Themis, much like we use tuition dollars and student fees to purchase books from various companies for the library and teaching tools from various vendors for professors.
A: No. The in-school resources are part of the Bar Success Fee and are available to every J.D. student. The post-graduation bar review course is optional, but recommended. If you decide to prepare with a different provider, you may do so at your own expense. This decision will not impact the resources you receive during law school.
A: Yes. All J.D. students who pay the Bar Success Fee are eligible.
