Honor Code Outcomes

The Hearing Committee selects outcomes by secret ballot requiring at least four votes. If no outcome reaches four votes, the default is automatically a written reprimand placed in the student's official record. This is the floor, not the ceiling.

The enumerated outcomes

 

The committee can impose one or more of the following:

• Written reprimand, made part of the student's official record
• Loss of credit for the specific academic endeavor involved (i.e., the assignment or exam at issue)
• Loss of credit for the entire course for which the work was prepared
• Suspension for a stated period
• Expulsion, or revocation of degree if the violation is found after graduation
• Probation for a stated period, which must include specific terms
• Reduction of course grade, up to and including failure with an Honor Board citation (XF designation)
• Community service, to be specified in amount
• Any other outcome the Hearing Committee deems appropriate

Premeditation and prior violations are the most serious aggravating factors. Cooperation and admission are the primary mitigating ones, which is why an Agreed Statement of Facts, if the respondent goes that route, can matter at the sanctions stage even if it does not help on the finding itself.
