Its the people who make a business school great and our faculty are essential part of the UBalt story. Each year a few of our professors are recognized with awards for their service to our community and for their teaching excellence. Congratulations to all of this year's awardees.

Jiaoping Chen, Ph.D.

Dr. Jiaoping Chen, assistant professor of information systems holds the Lockheed Martin Chair. This chair supports a Merrick School of Business faculty member whose current research is actively shaping their field. The Chair holder is a scholar whose work commands the attention of peers and practitioners alike, and who also practices sound teaching and contributes to service in the School of Business.

Claire Guo, Ph.D.

Dr. Claire Guo, assistant professor of decision science holds the J. William Middendorf Chair. This honor was established to strengthen the Merrick School of Business by attracting and retaining faculty who bring teaching and research together in balance, the Middendorf Chair provides the support that makes exceptional scholar-educators possible. The chair holder is a faculty member whose learner-centered excellence and research contributions grow together — the kind of professor whose presence at Merrick signals that this is a school where great teachers do great scholarship, and great scholars teach.

Kate Demarest, associate dean and lecturer in accounting

Kathryn Demarest, MST, CPA

Kathryn Demarest is the associate dean and lecturer in accounting and holds the G. Maxwell Armor, Jr. Lectureship. We recognize that the best business classrooms are sometimes led by those who spend their days doing the work they teach. The G. Maxwell Armor, Jr. Lectureship brings such educators to the Merrick School of Business, supporting non-tenure-track faculty whose learner-centered excellence is enriched by real-world responsibility within and beyond the university. The Lectureship holder is a leader of of many of the School's initiatives with dedication to student success.

Associate Dean Demarest is a graduate of the UBalt M.S. in Taxation program.

Hoang Nguyen, Ph.D.

Hoang Nguyen is a professor of finance and holds The John P. and Margaret Thompson Professorship. The Thompson Professorship supports a Merrick School of Business faculty who are dedicated to preparing students for skills of the future. This award recognizes faculty who leverage emerging technologies to enhance educational outcomes.

Dr. Hoang Nguyen is a graduate of the UBalt M.S. in Business-Finance program.

Mikhail Pevzner, professor of accounting

Mikhail Pevzner, Ph.D

Mikhail Pevzner is a professor of accounting and holds the E&Y Chair in Accounting. The Ernst & Young Chair in Accounting serves as a vital bridge between the rigors of the academy and the evolving demands of the accounting profession. By recognizing a faculty member who excels in both scholarship and pedagogy, this chair honors a professor who advances the discipline while simultaneously mentoring the next generation of practitioners.

Amir Pezeshkan, Ph.D.

Amir Pezeshkan is a professor of management and holds the CSX Leadership Chair. The CSX Leadership Chair honors a faculty member at the Merrick School of Business whose work leads by demonstration rather than by declaration. A scholar-educator whose research contributes to the field and whose teaching incorporates key findings in the field and helps the School of Business grow.

Praneet Randhawa, Ph.D.

Praneet Randhawa is an associate professor of marketing and holds the Frank Baker Chair. This chair focuses on attracting, retaining, and rewarding outstanding faculty by providing the strongest possible support for their work advancing the mission of the Merrick School of Business — the Frank Baker Chair holder is a faculty member whose presence elevates the school itself — the kind of educator that mentors our students, inspires fellow scholars, and embodies the unique value of a business education rooted in the city of Baltimore.

Kalyan Singhal, DBA

Kalyan Singhal is a distinguished university professor of supply chain management and holds the Doris and Robert McCurdy Chair. This honor recognizes scholarly achievement at its highest level and is reserved for a Merrick School of Business faculty member whose research has defined a career of distinction. The recipient is a scholar whose body-of-work has shaped their field, influenced peers and practitioners, and elevated the intellectual reputation of the school.

Jan Williams, Ph.D.

Jan Williams is a professor of accounting holds the MBA Class of '83 Impact Professorship. This professorship offers the dean of the Merrick School of Business to recognize a faculty member who shows outstanding commitment to both classroom excellence and meaningful connections between business education and professional practice.

Dr. Williams is a graduate of the UBalt M.S. in Taxation program.

Nafeesa Yunus, Ph.D.

Nafeesa Yunus is a professor of finance and real estate currently holds the Harry Y. Wright Chair in Finance. The Wright Chair recognizes faculty whose finance research portfolio is matched by dedication to quality teaching and service. They are the kind of professor whose research informs the decisions of policymakers and practitioners alike, and whose combined excellence across all facets of academic life defines the very highest aspirations of the Merrick School of Business.

Cong Zhang, Ph.D.

Cong Zhang is an assistant professor of information systems and holds the Mary and William Baker Chair. Advancing the Merrick School’s mission requires a dedicated effort across every facet of academic life—teaching, research, service leadership. The Mary & William G. Baker Faculty Fellows are chosen for their ability to translate that mission into tangible results for our students and our city.

Ting Zhang, Ph.D.

Ting Zhang is a professor of economics and leads the School's faculty. She holds the Harry Y. Wright Chair in Economics. The Wright Chair recognizes faculty whose economics research portfolio is matched by dedication to quality teaching and service.
